Why is this happening?

Apple used an anodized aluminum frame on these models. Anodizing gives color and some protection, but it is not immune to chipping.

The new camera bump has sharper edges than before, and those edges act like stress points. Combine that with the anodized finish and you get visible damage quickly.

It doesnt mean the phones are weak overall, but the finish can fail under normal contact with keys, coins or rough pockets.

Which models are most affected?

Reports point mainly to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max , and some mention of the iPhone 17 Air in Space Black.

Journalists and teardown channels have shown the same pattern on display units as well as customer devices, suggesting the issue is widespread, not isolated.

What should you do now?

The only practical prevention right now is to use a protective case that covers the frame and camera edges.

Avoid metal rings or mounts that press on the frame. If you already have visible chips, document them with photos and contact Apple support to ask about repairs or replacements. Apple has not issued a formal fix yet.

iPhone 17 Pro scratchgate is a real annoyance for early adopters. The phones are otherwise strong and capable, but the finish on some colorways is fragile. Until Apple responds, using a case is the sensible step.
