And a month ago, as The Information reported in their Weekend issue on Oct 24, 2025, regarding OpenAI’s move to adapt to the Facebook era. As per the report, OpenAI has grabbed more than 600 ex-Meta employees into the not-so-large OpenAI staff base of 3000 (via LinkedIn).

So, if Altman is importing more than 20% of employees as former Meta employees, that means he has been into something that Meta has been doing for ages. And now this code references to ads adds fuel to speculation.

Last month, OpenAI did a revolutionary move of making the ChatGPT GO subscription completely free for 1 year without any credit card requirements for users from the India region, which was previously 400 INR (4.45 USD) per month.

Sam knows that India has the 2nd largest internet user base after China, with around 806 million users , and the internet is one of the cheapest around the globe (around 0.08 USD per GB ).

So, it is the perfect opportunity for OpenAI to test the ‘ads’ inside ChatGPT. Note that there are a number of regions and countries where the GO plan is still a paid plan.

Altman previously hinted that ads were on the roadmap, but with promises not to sacrifice answer quality for paid placement.

Beneficial for OpenAI?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has over 800 million users on a weekly basis, which is a substantial increment from 300 million weekly users in late 2024. And as per a study conducted in July 2025, it was estimated that over 700 million users are sending more than 18 billion messages weekly.

So, if we do the correct math, more than 2.5 billion messages are being sent daily on ChatGPT, and if OpenAI shows 1 ad per 10 messages, that means more than 300 million impressions per day. Note that this scenario is a a hypothetical back-of-the-envelope example, not a prediction

Well, these are rough numbers, and the strategy could be totally different from what we are assuming. But overall ads could move OpenAI to a profitable company after all.

As ChatGPT has a number of subscriptions available, both free and paid, the strategy could be a little different for each category of users.

Well, if you are familiar with other famous AI chatbots like Perpelexity, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Google’s AI Overviews, they are already doing it by showing ads inside the answers generated by them.

Since there is no official confirmation from the company or any executive, the how part of the implementation is still unknown, but the code references from the beta app show a certainty that ads are coming soon to ChatGPT.
