Let’s talk about this COD free Xbox thing that kind of blew up online recently. A bunch of people, including me, noticed that Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III were showing up as free on the Xbox Store .
Yeah, the full games . It looked real, not like a demo or anything. Everyone thought Activision was giving the games away for free just like that. But it turns out that’s not what really happened.

What Actually Happened
So here’s the thing. On July 29, 2025 , Activision made a big change to how Call of Duty is installed and played.
Before, everything was stuck inside this one launcher called Call of Duty HQ , which honestly was a mess. It used way too much storage, over 300 GB in some cases. That’s rough, especially on consoles.
What they did was remove Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III from the HQ system and made them standalone games.

Meaning, you can now install and run them separately, like normal games. No need for that bloated launcher anymore.
While doing this shift, something weird happened. On the Xbox Store , the listings for these two games started showing up as free .
It wasn’t just one person seeing this, a lot of players shared screenshots, some even started installing them.
But once they launched the game, it didn’t work fully. You’d get a prompt saying you need a license. So the game looked free, but you couldn’t actually play unless you already owned it.
Was It Really Free? No.
Let’s be clear. This wasn’t a giveaway. Activision didn’t announce anything about these games being made free.
There was no event or promo going on. It was most likely just a technical error or something that got messed up during the transition.
The listing said “Free,” but it didn’t mean you had access. Some players were able to download parts, like the campaign files, but they still couldn’t play the full game unless they had bought it before.
It was confusing. And yeah, people got excited and then disappointed.
Why This Matters for Players
Here’s what you should take from this. If you saw COD free Xbox and thought you were getting the full games, sorry, but that’s not the case. This wasn’t meant to happen. Activision hasn’t given any hints that it will be free in the future either.
But if you already own MWII or MWIII , this update is actually good news. You can delete the HQ launcher now and just keep the games you want. Saves space, makes loading faster, and you don’t have to deal with the messy interface anymore.
Also, it looks like they’re doing this to prepare for the release of Black Ops 7 , which is supposed to come out later this year. Breaking the games out into separate installs probably makes it easier to manage in the long run.
This whole COD-free Xbox situation was mostly just a glitch that got noticed by a lot of people. It’s not the first time store listings go weird like this, and probably won’t be the last. But yeah, don’t get your hopes up. If Activision ever makes the games free, they’ll say it officially.
Right now, you still need to buy them if you want full access.
So, to sum up, MWII and MWIII aren’t free; they just looked like they were for a short time. What did happen, though, is that the games got separated from the old launcher, and that’s a solid change for people who already own them.
