Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remake - 1

It seems that after years of speculation, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is finally receiving a remake treatment.

Bethesda just teased some news related to the Oblivion Remake on 22 April at 11 AM ET, posting an image that features an Imperial Guard with visuals well beyond the capabilities of the original game.

Though unconfirmed, the high-resolution character model and timing make a very strong case for the long-rumored Oblivion remake to be a real thing — and quite potentially dropping right after the reveal.

Hi-Fi Rush also did this with Bethesda in 2023, getting announced and released all on the same day.

Could the Oblivion Remake Be Dropping on 22 April?

Rumors of an Oblivion remake have circulated for years, but this time around, the details and timing tell a different story.

Several insiders have gone so far as to suggest that a remake could be announced and released the same day, a bold (yet not unprecedented) move by Kyle Planet, which Underground Pod could very well be doing by now.

Then again, Bethesda just did something like this with Hi-Fi Rush earlier in 2023, releasing the game right out of nowhere at a Developer Direct showcase.

So, while we still wait for an official announcement, the smart money is technically on a surprise drop tomorrow — certainly an exciting prospect for both old and new fans.

Unreal Engine 5 and the Future of Open-World RPGs

If indeed the reports are true, this Oblivion remake may be a giant step up in technical ambition. The project is said to be built on Epic Games’ state-of-the-art Unreal Engine 5 (via leaks).

That means we might all watch a totally reimagined Cyrodiil come to life with:

  • Nanite geometry is used for high-detail environments and architecture.
  • Lumen global illumination for dynamic and lifelike lighting.
  • Chaos physics and Niagara VFX add realism with reactions and particle effects.
  • World Partition system for seamless loading and massive open worlds.
  • Virtual Texturing for incredibly high-resolution assets without performance loss.

One of the most bothersome limitations in older Bethesda games — especially Oblivion and even Starfield — was the jarring load screens between interiors and exteriors.

This was because the Creation Engine worked on the basis of splitting up environments into ‘cells’. However, with the deep, robust tools in Unreal Engine 5, that restriction could soon be history.

How Unreal Engine 5 Could Transform Oblivion

If Bethesda is abandoning the hellscape, loading-screen cell-based architecture in favor of seamless exploration, perhaps this remake now has the opportunity to deliver on a long-promised feature of the franchise — that of a fully continuous, immersive fantasy space.

Walking into a tavern or stepping into a dungeon with no loading screen may sound insignificant, but for immersion-loving players, it could be game-changing.

Final Thoughts: The Countdown Begins

With barely a day to go before Bethesda’s full reveal, the gaming community can now gear up for what might be a watershed moment in RPG history.

Whether you’ve been an Oblivion fan since it was first released or are someone who skipped it the first time around, there’s plenty to be excited about.

The idea of a graphically revamped, mechanically updated, and completely immersive reimagination of one of the most fondly remembered role-playing games of all time is an exciting one.

Well, keep an eye on Bethesda tomorrow morning—because if the rumors do pan out, we’ll be re-entering the gates of Cyrodiil sooner than we would have guessed.
