What the Online Gaming Bill 2025 says?

The new law is very clear. If an online game needs a user to deposit money to play and win rewards, it is no longer legal.

This includes fantasy sports, online rummy, poker and other real-money titles. On the other hand, free-to-play games, competitive gaming, and social gaming remain unaffected.

How Platforms are Responding?

Dream11

One of the biggest names in fantasy sports, Dream11 , has stopped all its cash-based contests. The company has informed its users that their balances are safe and they can withdraw funds anytime. Its other apps like Dream Picks and Dream Play are also affected by this suspension.

MPL

Another big player, Mobile Premier League (MPL) , has also shut down its real-money gaming. They are no longer taking deposits but withdrawals are still open for users. MPL said they will now focus on free-to-play and competitive games that don’t involve money.

Gameskraft and Zupee

Gameskraft , the company behind RummyCulture, has paused its add-cash services and gameplays. Zupee too has stopped its paid contests but continues to run free games such as Ludo and Snakes & Ladders.

While the companies are currently following the law, reports say that industry bodies are preparing to challenge the Online Gaming Bill 2025 in the Supreme Court.

Their argument is expected to focus on the point that some games, like poker and rummy, are based on skill rather than chance.

They may say that the government did not hold enough discussions with the industry before bringing in such a strict ban.

Beyond Gaming

The effect of this bill goes far beyond just gamers. Since advertising is banned and payments are blocked, entire business models are under threat.

Sponsorships are also in question. For example, Dream11’s sponsorship of the Indian cricket team is now uncertain.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already confirmed that it will follow whatever the government decides.

So, overall the Online Gaming Bill 2025 is one of the most important laws the Indian gaming industry has seen.

It has stopped all real-money games overnight and forced platforms like Dream11 , MPL , and Gameskraft to change their business.

While the government says this is to encourage safe gaming, the industry is preparing to fight back in court. For now, Indian gamers and companies are entering a completely new phase.
