Red Dead Redemption 2 came later but was a prequel. It was set in 1899 and showed Arthur Morgan’s story and the Van der Linde gang.

This leaves Rockstar with two ways to build Red Dead Redemption 3 . One is to continue with Jack Marston’s story after 1911. The other is to go further back in time with another prequel.

Why fans reject a modern setting

Recently, a post in a Red Dead Redemption community suggested that Jack Marston could fight in World War I or even World War II.

The response was quick and mostly negative. Fans said that this idea would take the game away from what makes it special.

Most players feel that if the story goes too far ahead, the game will stop being a western. The whole theme of the series is about outlaws trying to hold on while civilization takes over.

If Jack becomes a soldier in the world wars, it will not feel like Red Dead Redemption 3 , it will feel like a different game.

One fan even said, “Jack in the World Wars wouldn’t be Red Dead. This is stupid.” That kind of sums up how strongly the community feels.

Why does another prequel make sense?

With the western setting being so important, many believe the safer and more logical step is to go back again.

A lot of fans want to see how Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews first started the gang. It could also show younger versions of Arthur Morgan and John Marston before the events of RDR2.

This path would keep the story in the right timeline and still give Rockstar new space to tell fresh stories without breaking the identity of the franchise.

Overall, there is no official word from Rockstar yet on Red Dead Redemption 3, but the message from players is clear. Keep the setting in the Wild West.

Whether Rockstar makes another prequel or finds another way to expand the gang’s story, the fans don’t want the franchise pushed into the modern wars. The heart of the series is the western feel, and that is what they want kept alive.
