The game was still in the concept phase when it was reportedly pulled. The main character was going to be a Black man who was formerly enslaved. The story would follow him leaving the South to escape violence and find a new life in the West.
He was supposed to be recruited by the Assassins’ Brotherhood and then return to the South to confront the newly formed Ku Klux Klan in 1865.
The plot would cover sensitive topics like the rights of former slaves and the challenges of reunifying the Southern states after the war.
It seems that the difficult historical topics were the main reason the game was cancelled. Ubisoft reportedly felt the story was too risky given today’s political environment.

Plans for a Reconstruction Era game also dropped
There was also a planned game set in the Reconstruction era. It was supposed to feature the Black assassin Yashuke fighting the KKK.
Game File reports that some Ubisoft employees said the project got initial approval, but the wider concerns about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) led leadership to cancel it.

About Assassin’s Creed
The Assassin’s Creed series is Ubisoft’s flagship historical action-adventure game. It shows a conflict between the Assassins, who fight for free will, and the Knights Templar, who want control.
The series is known for recreating real historical events like the Crusades and the French Revolution in detailed open worlds.
Overall, the cancellation of the Assassin’s Creed Civil War game shows how challenging it is to handle sensitive historical topics in video games. Ubisoft seems to have decided that the story was too risky for today’s political and social climate.
