Meta, the company we all know behind Facebook, has been working on AR projects for a long time, especially its Project Orion glasses. However, the company is now making a significant change.
Instead of focusing solely on devices, Meta is dedicating serious attention to its Meta robotics software . The idea is simple: hardware alone will not make robots useful, but the right software can change everything.
Meta robotics software: A new change in strategy
Software first, not hardware

While reports say that a robot called Metabot is being tested, the larger plan is different. Meta wants to build an open-source robotics software platform that anyone can license.
This is very similar to how Google’s Android became the base for many smartphones. Meta believes if they can get the software right, others can take care of the physical machines.
Why is software the real barrier?
Andrew Bosworth, the CTO of Meta, has openly said that “software is the bottleneck.” He points out that the biggest problem with robotics is not about making the robot body or sensors, but making software that lets the machine think, move, and act like a human helper. Without this, robots will remain basic and limited.
The push of a world model
To solve this, Meta has put its robotics team, led by Marc Whitten , who was once the CEO of Cruise, together with its Superintelligence Labs.
Their first big job is to create a world model . In simple words, a world model helps a robot understand what is happening around it and how to react. This is very important because a robot will need this kind of system to use fine motor skills.

For example, holding an object gently or folding clothes needs much more than strong arms; it needs advanced software thinking.
Meta has already considered how this technology could go into daily life. Reports suggest that by 2025, the company was already thinking about robots that can do house chores like cleaning or folding laundry.
A growing competition
Meta is not alone in this race. Apple is also exploring home robotics, while Tesla has been showing off its Optimus robot. But Meta’s move is slightly different.
Apple and Tesla are building the robots themselves, and Meta wants to make the brains that could power all types of robots in the future.
This way, Meta does not need to win with hardware, but instead provides the platform that could become standard across the industry.

The move toward Meta robotics software shows how the company is changing its path. Even if its AR glasses don’t become the next big thing, Meta is betting that the real opportunity lies in robotics.
If their plan works, Meta could become one of the most important players in automation by creating the software foundation for the next generation of robots.
